Fury as IG Kanja Fires Warning on Police Recruitment, Outlines Strict Selection Criteria

As Kenya prepares for a nationwide police recruitment exercise, Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has promised that the process will be fair, open, and free from corruption.

Speaking on Thursday, October 2, Kanja outlined the strict measures put in place to guide the week-long exercise.

He explained that only candidates who meet the required academic and physical qualifications will be shortlisted, adding that no shortcuts will be tolerated.

“The candidates must meet the educational standards, pass all tests, and prove that they are fit for the tough demands of policing,” the Inspector General said.

Kanja warned Kenyans not to be tricked by impostors or corrupt individuals claiming they can influence the recruitment in exchange for bribes.

He stressed that giving money to recruiting officers or middlemen will automatically disqualify an applicant and could also lead to criminal charges.

He further noted that anyone who presents fake documents such as forged certificates, medical reports, or IDs will face immediate rejection and prosecution under the law.

“To my fellow officers taking part in this exercise, I want to be clear—anyone found engaging in corruption or malpractice will face serious consequences, including dismissal from the service and criminal charges,” Kanja warned.

To ensure accountability, oversight teams will be monitoring the exercise closely, with unannounced visits expected across different recruitment centers.

The recruitment is scheduled to run from October 3 to October 9 in 416 centers across the country. The goal is to hire about 10,000 new police constables.

Applicants must be Kenyan citizens aged between 18 and 28 and must have scored at least a D- in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).

Kanja encouraged the public to report any irregularities they witness during the exercise. He also urged young Kenyans who qualify to seize the opportunity and apply, saying the service needs dedicated men and women who are ready to serve with integrity.

“This is a chance for our youth to join a noble profession and help keep our country safe,” he added.
