BREAKING NEWS: Maraga Unveils Party For 2027 Presidential Bid

Former Chief Justice David Kenani Maraga has officially announced that he will contest for the presidency in the 2027 General Election.

He will run on the United Green Movement Party (UGM) ticket, marking his first major step into active politics after retiring from the Judiciary.

The announcement was made at the party’s headquarters in Nairobi, where Maraga was unveiled as the party’s flag bearer. Addressing supporters, the former CJ said he joined the UGM because its principles align with his own values.

“I chose this party because it stands for the rule of law, protection of human rights, and respect for democracy,” Maraga said.

“My mission is to restore the dignity of Kenyans and ensure their rights are respected.”

The United Green Movement Party is associated with politician Neto Agostinho, a former Ndhiwa MP. Neto, who co-leads the party with other politicians, welcomed Maraga’s entry, saying it would strengthen UGM ahead of the 2027 race.

Maraga has been keen to connect with the youth, especially Gen Z, during recent political events.

He attended the launch of the party’s Kwale County office earlier this year and pledged to make young people central to his campaign.

According to him, Kenya’s future lies in giving the youth opportunities to lead and shape governance.

To fund his campaign, Maraga said he will rely partly on contributions from Kenyans who believe in his vision, in addition to his personal input.

He revealed that he intends to spend between Ksh1 million and Ksh2 million of his own money, while encouraging well-wishers to support the movement.

The former CJ also used the event to clarify comments he recently made about the state of the nation, which had drawn criticism from President William Ruto.

Maraga explained that his words had been misrepresented.

“I never said Kenya is a failed state,” he clarified.

“What I said is that the country is sliding toward becoming one, especially after the Gen Z protests. My concern is about governance and the need for accountability.” Click here.
