"Sina, I Don't Have Money To Give You & I Don't Buy Support With Cash." - Youths Left In Limbo After Maraga Refuses To Give Them Fare After Meeting

A group of youths in Mombasa were left stranded and disappointed after attending a political meeting with former Chief Justice David Maraga, only to walk away empty-handed when he declined to provide them with transport money.

The meeting, which was part of Maraga’s tour of the coastal region, was expected to attract young people eager to hear his plans ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Many of the youths turned up, hopeful that like in other political gatherings, they would at least receive some allowance to cover their transport back home.

However, things did not go as they had anticipated. When some participants raised the issue of fare, Maraga responded firmly.

“Sina. I do not have money to give you. I will not buy support with cash. What I am offering is a vision for better leadership,” he said.

His response shocked a section of the crowd, with some openly showing their frustration. A few complained that they had used their last coins to attend the meeting, expecting reimbursement.

On the other hand, Maraga insisted that handouts have damaged Kenyan politics for too long. He told the youth that they must change their mindset if they want to see true leadership.

“If I give you money today, what difference will it make tomorrow? I want your support for ideas and policies, not for cash," he added.

One of his campaign activists, Shakira Wafula, stepped in to calm the situation. She reminded the young people that Maraga’s leadership style was different from what they were used to.

According to her, the former CJ believes in honesty, integrity, and servant leadership, and would not bow to the culture of “buying” crowds.

She also assured the youths that no one would be left stranded, promising that arrangements would be made to ensure they got home safely.

Others argued that it was unfair for leaders to call meetings without considering the basic needs of the people invited.
