Division Rocks Jubilee As Matiang'i Told What'll Happen If He Accepts To Vie Using Uhuru's Party

Taifa Leo has established that Former President Uhuru Kenyatta, is deliberating on whether to hand over Jubilee party to former Interior cabinet secretary, Fred Matiang'i ahead of Jubilee National Delegates Conference (NDC).

However, according to those close to Matiang'i, the move has caused mixed reactions, with some endorsing the move, while others warning the former Interior cabinet secretary against falling into Kenyatta's trap.

Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka yesterday confirmed that discussions are ongoing to position Dr. Matiang’i as Jubilee’s leader and its presidential candidate in 2027.

“It’s an issue currently on the table, and we are evaluating it alongside other options before making a decision,” said Mr. Onyonka, a close ally of Matiang’i.

Nevertheless, the Senator admitted there is significant division: some want Dr. Matiang’i to join Jubilee, which is already perceived as a national party.

On the other hand, others prefer he lead UPA so that he has a party with strong support in his political home turf.

“We’re weighing both options, but ultimately the decision lies with Dr. Matiang’i himself. If he agrees to lead Jubilee, we will support him,” he added.

However, those opposed to Dr. Matiang’i joining Jubilee argue that if he does, his loyalty would inevitably rest with Mr. Kenyatta.

Jubilee Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni has previously been quoted saying the party would support Dr. Matiang’i in 2027.

Meanwhile, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has opposed Dr. Matiang’i joining Jubilee, instead urging him to take over UPA to secure grassroots backing, political influence, and bargaining power.

“For him to be respected, together with the Gusii community, he must have a homegrown party before going to battle elsewhere,” Mr. Gachagua said.
