Two Dead, One Injured After Lorry Plunges Into River

Two people lost their lives and another sustained injuries after a lorry plunged into the Nzoia River along the Bomet-Kaplong Highway on Sunday morning, August 17, 2025.

According to eyewitness accounts and safety alerts shared online, the lorry was heading towards Kaplong when the driver appeared to lose control near the Soymet Bridge.

The vehicle veered off the road before falling into the river. Members of the public, together with emergency responders, rushed to the scene to assist in the rescue mission.

One occupant of the vehicle survived the crash and was immediately taken to Kaplong Hospital for treatment.

Doctors confirmed that he was out of danger but would remain under observation. The other two occupants were confirmed dead at the scene.

Images shared from the scene showed residents and officials working together to recover the wreckage and retrieve the bodies.

Local authorities have begun investigations to establish the cause of the accident. Mechanical failure, overspeeding, and poor road conditions are among the possible causes being considered.

The Sunday morning tragedy follows another deadly accident that happened just a day earlier along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway

In that incident, two people died while three others were injured after a trailer collided with a pickup truck before hitting another lorry at Kwa Mautiiyo in the Malii area.

Police officers confirmed that the driver of the trailer and a young man travelling in the pickup died instantly. The injured victims were rushed to Machakos Level 5 Hospital for treatment.

The back-to-back accidents highlight the worrying trend of rising road crashes across the country.

According to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), at least 2,933 people have died on Kenyan roads between January and August 10 this year alone.

Transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir recently addressed the issue, saying that the government had dispatched a special team to inspect high-risk sections of major highways and provide solutions within a week.

He noted that many accidents could be avoided if both motorists and pedestrians strictly followed traffic rules.

“The surge in accidents is preventable. We urge all road users to stay vigilant and respect safety measures at all times,” Chirchir said.
