President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga have made it clear that the ruling UDA party and the ODM are forming a political alliance ahead of the 2027 general election.
The two leaders have announced that the Kenya Kwanza Parliamentary Group and ODM will hold joint quarterly meetings to evaluate the implementation of their 10-point interparty agreement.
This comes as the president works to quell opposition to the UDA-ODM political pact, as part of a strategy to woo the Orange Party, which remains popular in the Nyanza, Western, and Coastal regions.
With ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, seemingly on President William Ruto's throat, Kenya Kwanza nsiders say the President aims to address grievances raised by some senior ODM officials.
This includes demands for compensation for victims of protests, increased resource allocation to counties, and ending killings and abductions allegedly linked to police, as a way to stem rebellion against his political deal with Mr. Odinga.
ODM has made it clear that full implementation of the 10-point Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will determine whether a pre-election coalition for 2027 can be formed.
The party also believes that continued cooperation with President Ruto is only possible if the agreement is fully implemented.
Despite Edwin Sifuna being vocal in pushing for ODM to pull out of the agreement, citing UDA’s failure to fulfill its commitments, Mr. Odinga has already ruled out an early withdrawal from the inclusive government formed last year, in which some of his close allies were appointed to the Cabinet and others as advisers.
Instead, the former prime minister has stressed that he fully supports President Ruto until the next general election.
“We have said that we are in government until 2027. After 2027, those are matters we will discuss at the right time, and the decision will be made by the party members, not Raila Odinga alone,” Mr. Odinga said.
