Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna is expected to face fierce criticism today from party colleagues during an ODM meeting in Nairobi, as divisions deepen within the party over its cooperation with President William Ruto’s administration.
The meeting, chaired by ODM leader Raila Odinga, is aimed at calming growing dissent, with some leaders pushing for Sifuna’s removal as party secretary-general.
Over the weekend, Raila appeared to defend Sifuna during a rally in Kakamega, insisting that the senator had a right to express his personal views. However, by Sunday in Karachuonyo, Homa Bay, Raila appeared to backtrack, clarifying:
“I said Sifuna has a right to his personal opinion, but members are not bound to follow it. We will meet as a party, discuss the matter, and issue an official ODM position,” Raila told supporters.
Meanwhile, Siaya Senator Dr. Oburu Oginga, Raila’s elder brother has called for Sifuna’s ouster, accusing him of arrogance and undermining the party.
“We are tired of Sifuna. ODM’s cooperation with government is a collective party decision, not an individual one,” Oburu said during a radio interview, drawing cheers from youth supporters.
“If he thinks he’s too important, he should ask Ababu Namwamba what happened to him. Sifuna must leave ODM,” Oburu added,
Sources within ODM revealed that leaders from Nyanza—Raila’s home region—plan to confront him at the meeting over his perceived favoritism toward Sifuna, arguing it has embarrassed them politically.
Other party figures who have criticized Sifuna include Makadara MP George Aladwa and Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi.
