Raymond Nachibati: Questions as Man Dies in Police Cell Hours After Being Arrested For Assaulting His Wife

The death occurred on Saturday, August 9, at Bundonga Police Post, sparking concerns about what really happened behind closed doors.

The man, Raymond Nachibati Wawire, had been arrested following a dispute at his home.

According to accounts from those close to the family, the disagreement started when his wife, Celestine Barasa, confronted him over his plan to marry a second wife.

The confrontation reportedly escalated, and Celestine’s brother became involved. All three were arrested, but Celestine and her brother were released shortly afterwards.

Later the same day, police reported that Nachibati was found hanging inside his cell, with a string from his tracksuit tied around his neck. Authorities suggested he took his own life.

His mother, Esther Khayemba, rejects this claim. She said it is common police practice to remove any potentially dangerous items from detainees before locking them up. She does not believe her son could have been allowed to keep a rope or shoelaces inside the cell.

“When a suspect is searched, nothing that can be used for harm is left with them. I believe my son was attacked, and the scene made to look like suicide,” she said.

His father, Bonface Nachibati, also questioned the explanation given by police. He asked why the other two people arrested in the same incident were freed so quickly, while his son ended up dead. He said police should explain how a rope appeared in a secure cell.

The family has appealed to the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) to investigate. They believe foul play may have been involved and want the truth about the final hours of Nachibati’s life.

The body has been moved to Kakamega County Teaching and Referral Hospital, where a post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
