Kesho Asubuhi, Kila Mtu Millioni Moja - Ruto Tells Harambee Stars Players After Beating DRC

NAIROBI, Kenya, August 3, 2025 – Harambee Stars players will each pocket Ksh 1 million on Monday morning as a reward for their thrilling 1-0 win over the Democratic Republic of Congo in the African Nations Championship (CHAN) opener.

The announcement was made by President William Ruto, who congratulated the national team for making a strong start to their first appearance in the continental competition.

The President directed Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Hussein Mohammed to handle the disbursement of the money without delay.

“Please give me a call first thing in the morning so you can come and get the money and then give to these gentlemen,” President Ruto said after the match at Kasarani Stadium.

The historic victory came on Sunday evening when midfielder Austin Odhiambo struck in the 46th minute, putting Kenya ahead against the Leopards of Congo.

The goal sparked loud celebrations among fans who filled the Kasarani stands. Under head coach Benni McCarthy, Harambee Stars showed resilience, defending their lead with determination as the Congolese piled pressure in the second half.

President Ruto praised the players’ fighting spirit and assured them of more incentives if they keep winning.

“I want to encourage you to keep it up. You have made us really proud today with the way you played. On Thursday, you face Angola, and I want you to continue pushing forward. As you do so, I will also continue adding more rewards,” he said.

The Head of State had already promised a massive reward package before the tournament began. According to his pledge, the team will receive Ksh 60 million if they reach the quarterfinals, Ksh 70 million for making it to the semifinals, and a record Ksh 600 million should they lift the CHAN trophy.

In case of a draw, each player and member of the team delegation will still be awarded Ksh 500,000.

The incentive package has been welcomed by both players and fans as a strong motivation. Austin Odhiambo, who scored the decisive goal, said the team was focused on making history.

“We are happy for the support we are getting from the government and Kenyans. This win is just the beginning. We will keep fighting for the country,” he said.

The Harambee Stars’ win puts them second in Group A with three points, the same as Morocco, who lead on goal difference after beating Angola 2-0 in the day’s late kickoff at Nyayo Stadium.

The next fixture against Angola will be crucial in deciding Kenya’s chances of advancing to the knockout stages.

Sunday’s victory also carried symbolic weight as it marked Kenya’s first competitive match under McCarthy, who was appointed earlier this year. The South African tactician expressed confidence that the team can build on this result.

“The boys showed courage and discipline. It was not an easy match, but they followed the plan and got the job done,” he said.
