A family in Machakos County is grieving after their daughter, Joy Mutisya, was killed alongside her friend, Jane Ndanu, in Kanyonyoo, Kitui County.
The suspect in the shooting is a young police officer — described by locals as part of the Gen Z generation — who is believed to have been in a secret relationship with Joy.
Joy, who was in her late thirties, was married to James Mutisya, and together they had two children: one in Form Three and another in Grade Six.
On the day of the incident, she reportedly left home saying she was going to Kitengela to look for work. However, police investigations indicate she travelled to Kitui instead to meet the officer.
Relatives say Joy was a caring wife and mother, and her sudden death has left a painful void. Her father-in-law, Jonathan Waema, said, “We never had problems with her. We do not understand how things reached this point.”
According to eyewitnesses, Joy was at her friend Jane’s home when the armed officer arrived. An argument broke out, and Jane tried to calm the situation.
The officer then opened fire with his AK-47, killing both women instantly. Witness Stanley Kiilu said Jane’s attempt to protect Joy may have triggered the double shooting.
After the killings, the officer reportedly fled on foot, abandoning his rifle in nearby bushes. Police have since launched a manhunt, but he remains at large.
Kitui County Police Commander Martha Nge’tich confirmed that the suspect had quarreled with Joy before the fatal incident.
In a chilling twist, Joy had recently posted on social media about how she wanted her eulogy written, telling friends to “mourn her with an African proverb.” Her words have now taken on a haunting meaning for her family.
Back in Machakos, her husband is left with the heavy responsibility of raising their children alone.
Family members say they feel betrayed, as the person responsible for her death is from the very institution meant to protect citizens.
“She was killed by a government officer, and now the same government is investigating. We only want justice,” Waema said.
Post-mortem examinations are expected soon as both families prepare to bury their loved ones, still hoping the suspect will be caught.
