Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has opened up about a private and emotional phone conversation he had with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua during the impeachment proceedings against the latter in October 2024.
The call, Babu reveals, played a pivotal role in shaping his decision to reject the motion to impeach Gachagua, a move that surprised many considering the political climate at the time.
According to Babu Owino, Rigathi Gachagua reached out to him personally, making a heartfelt plea.
“He told me, ‘My son, I beg of you, don’t vote against me,’” Babu recounted during an interview with Kameme Radio.
The MP explained that he was moved by Gachagua’s vulnerability and the difficulties he was going through amid the intense political scrutiny.
Babu said that as a fellow politician, he could relate to the pressures and tribulations that Gachagua faced. This empathy was a major factor in his decision to stand against the impeachment motion.
“I told him I was not going to vote for him,” Babu said, clarifying that he promised to shield Gachagua from further political harm, just as he would want others to do for him in a similar position.
The MP also criticized those orchestrating the impeachment, describing the process as a political witch hunt rather than a pursuit of justice.

He pointed out that the accusers were not free from scandal themselves and therefore lacked moral authority to pass judgment on Gachagua.
“Those who pursued the impeachment are more scandalous than Gachagua,” he stated emphatically.
Babu Owino’s decision not to vote in favor of the impeachment was a clear break from the majority in the National Assembly, where 282 MPs supported the motion.
