The sweltering Monday heat was no match for the chills that swept through Umoja Lodge, nestled in the heart of Nakuru’s bustling Lee Njiru Road, when horrifying screams erupted from Room 7, rattling windows and sending bystanders into a panic.
According to NTV Kenya's Mtaa wangu program, minutes later, silence. A deafening, deathly silence. And then, the discovery: a woman’s lifeless body sprawled across the bed, her face frozen in terror.
The victim, affectionately known by her peers as Zuchu, a familiar figure among the nightlife corridors of Nakuru, had reportedly spent the previous night with a man she’d just met, an encounter that now reads like the prologue to a nightmare.
According to Charity Wanjiru, Zuchu’s close friend and confidante, the evening had begun on a jovial note.
“We were just vibing, having drinks, talking about life. Then he walked in, red-eyed from chewing muguka, jittery, intense. Zuchu said she didn’t chew, so he offered her a cocktail instead,” Wanjiru told reporters, her voice cracking under the weight of disbelief.
Zuchu was last seen alive following the man to another entertainment joint, where he reportedly insisted on buying her more drinks.
The pair later vanished into the Nakuru night—only to reappear, as it would tragically turn out, as a crime scene.
Eyewitnesses at Umoja Lodge reported chilling, blood-curdling screams echoing through the corridor.
“It sounded like someone was being skinned alive,” claimed a night attendant, who requested anonymity.
The full extent of what happened behind that bolted door remains under police investigation, but early reports suggest signs of torture. The man, described as being in his late 30s, is currently at large.
Emilly Nekesa, of Smart Ladies Kenya, condemned the killing, demanding accountability:
“This wasn’t just a death, it was a slaughter. Zuchu was a mother, a friend, a human being. We will not rest until the person responsible is brought to justice.”
