Democratic Party leader Justin Muturi has questioned former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua's repeated claims that he played a decisive role in the election of Kenya's recent presidents.

Speaking during a recent interview, Muturi challenged Gachagua's assertion that his political influence helped propel both President William Ruto and former President Uhuru Kenyatta to power.
Gachagua has previously said he played a key role in President Ruto's 2022 election victory. He has also cited his time as Uhuru Kenyatta's personal assistant as part of his contribution to the former president's political journey, and has maintained that he retains significant influence in the Mt Kenya region.
Muturi dismissed those claims, questioning which presidents Gachagua could genuinely credit himself with helping elect. He argued that neither former President Mwai Kibaki nor Uhuru Kenyatta's rise to power could reasonably be attributed to Gachagua.
He said political discussions should be based on verifiable facts rather than personal claims, urging Kenyans to assess leaders based on their record and publicly available evidence.
Muturi's remarks echo concerns raised by People's Liberation Party leader Martha Karua, who has also disputed Gachagua's claim to being the undisputed political leader of the Mt Kenya region.
Karua has argued that no single politician can claim exclusive influence over the region, saying Mt Kenya has several prominent leaders with their own political support bases.
