Speaking during the burial ceremony of the late Ann Nyatoro, the mother of East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Kanini Kega, on Thursday, May 14, 2026, Sifuna urged opposition leaders to put aside political differences and work together in pursuit of a common goal.
The outspoken ODM Secretary General addressed former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua directly, saying the opposition had no alternative but to unite if they hoped to deny Ruto a second term in office.
His remarks come amid growing conversations within opposition circles over the possibility of forming a broad coalition to challenge Kenya Kwanza in 2027.
Sifuna warned that divisions among opposition leaders would only strengthen the ruling administration’s chances of retaining power. According to him, personal rivalries and past political disagreements should no longer stand in the way of building a formidable alliance.
The Nairobi senator further called for reconciliation among leaders who may have differed politically in the past, noting that the country’s future should take precedence over individual interests.
Referring to the fallout surrounding Gachagua’s impeachment and broader opposition tensions, Sifuna said leaders should embrace forgiveness and move forward together.
“So, whatever needs to be done, kama ni kusameheana, wacha basi tusameheane tu. Lakini haiwezekani tumpatie huyu ndugu yetu nafasi yeye aweze kurudi kwenye hiyo kiti aendelee kukandamiza wananchi wetu,” he stated.
Translated loosely, Sifuna argued that opposition leaders must forgive one another if necessary, but should not allow Ruto another opportunity to return to office and continue policies they believe have subjected Kenyans to economic hardship.
His comments come at a time when opposition realignment talks are gaining momentum across the country. Several leaders have been positioning themselves ahead of the next election, even as calls for a single opposition flag bearer continue to grow.
At the same time, a new opinion poll by Trends and Insights for Africa (TIFA) has revealed increasing public support for a possible opposition alliance involving Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and Sifuna.
According to the survey released on Thursday, May 14, 2026, 28 per cent of respondents supporting opposition candidates preferred a Kalonzo-Sifuna presidential ticket ahead of the next General Election.
The survey also ranked a possible Gachagua-Kalonzo alliance second with 25 per cent support, underlining the growing debate over who should lead the opposition coalition against Ruto.
Political analysts say the latest poll reflects an increasingly fluid opposition landscape, with younger leaders such as Sifuna gaining national visibility through aggressive grassroots mobilisation and outspoken criticism of the government.
In recent months, Sifuna has emerged as one of the most vocal opposition figures through the Linda Mwananchi movement, which has drawn significant support in urban centres and among young voters.
The senator has consistently maintained that opposition leaders must avoid splitting votes if they hope to mount a serious challenge in 2027. He has repeatedly stated that the country requires a unified political movement capable of consolidating support across different regions.
The latest developments are likely to intensify coalition negotiations within the opposition as leaders seek to identify a candidate capable of galvanising national support against the Kenya Kwanza administration.
With political temperatures already rising two years before the next election, Sifuna’s remarks signal growing urgency among opposition figures to begin building a united front early enough to avoid internal divisions that could weaken their chances at the ballot.
