Cases of people being swept away by floodwaters during this rainy season have been reported in many parts of Kenya, particularly in the Eastern and Coastal regions, where rivers have risen dangerously.
In the latest tragedy, a well-known businessman from Makueni County lost his life after being carried off by strong floodwaters while trying to cross an overflowing river.
The incident was reported on March 20, 2026, by Kalamba Location Chief Harrison Mutuku.
The deceased, identified as Daniel Mutunga, 20, a resident of Ulilinzi Village in Kibwezi Sub County, is reported to have drowned on the night of March 19, 2026, while attempting to cross the swollen River Kyewa.
Police officers and detectives from Nzaui Sub County visited the scene and found that Mutunga was travelling from Matiliku Market to Kalaani, where he runs a small business, when he was swept away by the fast-flowing waters.
His body was later recovered a few metres downstream, with visible bruises on both legs and the forehead.
Investigators processed the scene before transferring the body to Kilome Nursing Home in Emali, where it is awaiting a postmortem examination.
Authorities have repeatedly warned residents against crossing rivers during heavy rains, citing the ongoing risk of drowning.
