Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian has issued a rare public apology to neighbouring Middle Eastern countries following recent cross-border strikes, saying Tehran was left with “no choice” but to respond to what he described as American-backed military aggression.
In strongly worded address directed at regional leaders, Pezeshkian expressed regret over the impact of Iran’s actions while defending them as necessary for national security.
“Your Majesties, heads of friendly and neighbouring states, we have strived alongside you and through diplomacy to avoid war, but the American-Zionist military aggression has left us no choice but to defend ourselves,” he said.
The statement marks a significant diplomatic moment as tensions in the Middle East continue to rise amid escalating hostilities involving Iran, the United States, and allied forces.
While Pezeshkian did not detail specific operations, his remarks come after reports of Iranian strikes that affected areas in neighbouring countries, sparking regional concern.
By addressing “friendly and neighbouring states” directly, the Iranian president appeared to signal an attempt to prevent further diplomatic fallout and reassure regional partners that Tehran’s actions were defensive rather than expansionist.
Analysts say the apology reflects Iran’s awareness of the fragile geopolitical balance in the region, where any miscalculation could trigger broader conflict.
At the same time, Pezeshkian’s firm attribution of blame to Washington underscores Tehran’s longstanding narrative that U.S. military presence and alliances in the region are destabilizing forces.
Regional governments have yet to issue unified responses, but diplomatic channels are reportedly active as leaders seek to contain tensions and avoid wider confrontation.
Pezeshkian reiterated that Iran remains committed to dialogue but will act decisively if its sovereignty or security is threatened.
“We sought peace through diplomacy,” he emphasized, “but we will defend our people when compelled.”
The remarks come at a critical juncture for the Middle East, with global powers closely monitoring developments that could reshape alliances and security dynamics across the region.
