Photos have surfaced of a young Nairobi woman who was doused in acid by her ex-boyfriend, drawing fresh concern over rising cases of violence against women in the city.
The victim, identified as gospel singer Mary Claire, was attacked in broad daylight in Kibera.
The incident left her with serious injuries, and she is currently receiving treatment at Kenyatta National Hospital, where doctors continue to monitor her condition closely.
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko addressed the matter and promised to provide the woman with protection.
He dismissed the death rumours and promised to help Mary get justice.
Sonko said they would give her protection and told her not to worry, adding that they stand for justice, especially for those who are oppressed.
Her family has dismissed claims circulating online that she had died.
Her brother Daniel Odongo strongly denied the reports and blamed a senior officer for spreading false information.
He also shut down claims that his 23-year-old sister was dead and claimed that NIS officer Opiyo was the one spreading the rumours through people online.
The family further stated that Opiyo works with the National Intelligence Service.
Mary was allegedly attacked by a fellow gospel group member identified as Elvis Opiyo.
The case has attracted public attention, with leaders including Milly Odhiambo dismissing claims linked to the suspect.
According to her brother, Mary is showing signs of recovery, though some injuries remain a concern.
Doctors are especially monitoring her eyes and mouth, which were affected by the acid.
Her brother said she had shown great improvement, explaining that the skin was drying but doctors were still concerned about the eye and mouth because those areas take longer to heal.
Sonko has since provided the family with a lawyer, Elizabeth Ochieng, to pursue the case as investigations continue.
