Jubilee Party Deputy Leader Jeremiah Kioni on Tuesday left residents of Nakuru in laughter after taking a veiled swipe at DCP Party leader Rigathi Gachagua during a Jubilee Party event.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of a Jubilee Party office, Kioni, without mentioning names, said the party was keen on listening to the people.
However, he appeared to poke holes in Gachagua’s popular slogan of “listening to the ground,” terming it misleading.
Kioni remarked that listening to the ground could be interpreted as seeking guidance from “our forefathers,” whom he said cannot help move the country forward. His remarks triggered laughter from the crowd, who appeared to catch the hidden jab at the DCP leader.
He further took aim at those who frequently mentioning former President Uhuru Kenyatta in his speeches, insisting that Uhuru belongs to one political party and should be respected as such.
Jubilee and DCP parties are currently locked in a fierce battle for political dominance in the Mt Kenya region, with Gachagua seeking to consolidate his influence across the area.
The event was attended by Jubilee presidential hopeful Fred Matiang’i, alongside other senior party officials and aspirants from Nakuru County.
Matiang’i has embarked on an aggressive campaign to expand Jubilee Party’s grassroots presence, with plans to open offices across the country. He is expected to launch more offices in Nyandarua, Murang’a, Nyamira, and Kisii before the end of the month, before touring other regions.
