Six people are feared dead after a light aircraft crashed and burst into flames in Mosop, Nandi County, on Saturday evening, February 28.
The aircraft reportedly tumbled before catching fire, killing all six people on board. The accident happened in the Shempere area, drawing residents to the scene as smoke billowed into the sky.
Nandi County police commander Samuel Mukuusi confirmed the crash and said investigations had begun. Emergency responders arrived shortly after the incident, but there were no survivors.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that a sitting Member of Parliament may be among the victims. Sources at the scene suggested that Johana Ng'eno, who has represented Emurwa Dikir constituency since 2013, could have been on board.
Officials said a mobile phone and SIM card believed to belong to Ng’eno were recovered from the wreckage. Similar communication devices linked to Amos Kipngetich Rotich of the Kenya Forest Service were also found at the crash site.
Authorities have not formally confirmed the identities of the deceased. The remaining four victims have yet to be identified as forensic teams continue examining the charred remains.
The wreckage has been secured as aviation investigators begin piecing together what may have caused the fatal crash. Officials have urged the public to remain calm and avoid speculation until formal identification is completed and families are notified.
The tragedy has cast a sombre mood over Nandi County, with leaders and residents awaiting official communication on the identities of those who lost their lives.
It is high time now we join hands together and send our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased. May their souls rest in eternal peace.
