Opposition Chief Reacts As State House Allegedly Halts Azimio Top Changes, Sends This Bold Message

The fragile truce in our national politics appears to be hitting another major roadblock.

Just a week after the Azimio la Umoja coalition, under the guidance of former President Uhuru Kenyatta, announced a sweeping leadership overhaul, the transition has been met with a cold shoulder from the executive.

Kalonzo Musyoka, the man tapped to take over the mantle as Azimio’s Party Leader, has come out guns blazing.

In a defiant statement, Kalonzo has alleged that State House has moved to halt the coalition’s democratic process by instructing the Government Printer to block the official gazettement of their new leadership.

The tension stems from a major internal realignment. Following the decision of key ODM figures to join President Ruto’s broad-based government, Azimio moved to replace those now perceived as government allies, including high-ranking officials like MP Junet Mohamed.

The coalition sought to cement its identity as a distinct opposition, naming Kalonzo Musyoka as Leader, Caroli Omondi as Secretary General and Philip Kisia as Executive Director.

According to Kalonzo, these changes were perfectly legal. They were accepted by the Registrar of Political Parties and even publicized in local dailies.

However, when it came time for the Kenya Gazette to make it official on February 6, 2026, the process reportedly hit a wall of interference.

Kalonzo’s reaction isn't just about titles, it is about the precedent. He argues that this move directly violates the NADCO agreements, specifically the commitment to fidelity to the law on multiparty democracy as he says

However, this is clearly a litmus test for Kenya’s democratic health. If the executive can indeed pick and choose which party leadership changes get published, the very idea of an independent opposition is under threat.

As this standoff intensifies, the ball is now in State House’s court to explain why the ink has dried up at the Government Printer.
