President William Ruto has joined the hype around the upcoming boxing match between Majembe and Mbavu Destroyer, using the viral phrase Weka Mawe to connect the event with his development agenda.
On Sunday, February 8, 2026, Ruto met Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, who introduced the President to the boxing trend.
“Jalas! Mawe ile mimi najua ni ile ya affordable housing, SHA, Kazi Mtaani, NYOTA. Hiyo ndio ile mawe ile mimi najua,” Ruto said, turning the chant into a promotion for his government programs.
Jalang’o reminded him that the mawe in this case was the boxing kind, pointing out the upcoming fight on April 4, 2026.
“Sasa lazima uwekelee mawe Rais,” Jalang’o said.
Ruto asked for clarification: “Na hiyo mawe si affordable housing, si NYOTA, si SHA, na si soko?”
Jalang’o replied: “Hii ni mawe tofauti.”
The President then pledged cash support for the fighters, offering one million shillings each to Majembe and Mbavu Destroyer.
“Okay, Jalas, uyu Majembe na Mbavu Destroyer, uyu wa kuweka mawe, mimi nawekeea Majembe one million na Mbavu Destroyer one million,” Ruto said.
He also promised to buy tickets worth Ksh2,000 for fans attending the match. “Hii ni mbaya,” he added, showing excitement about the bout.
The phrase Weka Mawe has become Mbavu Destroyer’s signature, used in training when he invites someone to hit him with a stone, only to shrug it off.
Ruto cleverly linked this trend to broader conversations about affordable housing and his youth programs.
