Sifuna Absent as Oburu Chairs ODM Central Management Committee Meeting in Kilifi

Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader Oburu Oginga on Monday chaired a meeting of the party’s Central Management Committee (CMC) in Vipingo, Kilifi County, amid simmering internal tensions and ongoing debate over the party’s political direction.

In a statement shared on his official X account, Oburu said the meeting was convened in his capacity as party leader to allow for consultations on emerging political developments and national issues affecting the country.

He emphasised that the session formed part of ODM’s commitment to collective leadership and internal dialogue.

“I convened a meeting of the ODM Central Management Committee in Vipingo, Kilifi, in my capacity as Party Leader, for consultative discussions and engagement on emerging political and national issues,” Oburu stated.

He added that the party remains focused on unity and principled leadership as it navigates a politically fluid period following recent realignments at the national level.

The meeting brought together several senior ODM figures, including Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, who serves as the party’s national chairperson, and Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sheriff Nassir, one of the deputy party leaders.

Both leaders separately confirmed that the meeting was underway and described the discussions as forward-looking and candid.

Governor Wanga, posting on Facebook, said the CMC session was deliberating on key political and governance matters affecting both the party and the country.

Nassir, in a similar update on X, noted that members were engaged in open consultations aimed at shaping ODM’s strategy going forward.

Photos shared by ODM leaders and the party’s official social media platforms showed a strong turnout by senior officials. However, the absence of some key figures quickly attracted attention.

Notably missing from the meeting was ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna, who is also the Nairobi Senator.

Also absent was Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, one of the party’s deputy leaders. Their absence fuelled renewed speculation about internal rifts within the opposition party.

The ODM Central Management Committee is the party’s highest decision-making organ when it comes to mediating internal disputes and steering strategic direction between major conventions.

It is chaired by the party leader and includes deputy party leaders, the national chairperson, the secretary-general, the National Assembly Minority Leader, and other senior officials drawn from both parliamentary and party leadership.

Oburu Oginga was appointed ODM party leader following the death of longtime party chief Raila Odinga in October 2025, a transition that has since tested internal cohesion within the party.

Sifuna’s absence comes against the backdrop of growing pressure from some quarters within ODM calling for his removal from the powerful secretary-general position.

The Nairobi Senator has openly opposed ODM’s decision to enter into a broad-based political arrangement with President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA), a stance that has placed him at odds with several senior party figures.

In recent weeks, Sifuna has also been involved in a public spat with National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohamed, whom he accused of mismanaging funds allocated to ODM agents during the 2022 General Election. The allegations, which Junet has denied, further deepened divisions within the party.

The dispute triggered legal action by Migori Senator Eddy Oketch, who briefly moved to court seeking Sifuna’s removal before withdrawing the case following consultations with Oburu.

Oketch later called on the party leader to convene the National Delegates Convention (NDC) to resolve the party’s internal wrangles once and for all.

Other ODM leaders, including Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma, have publicly demanded disciplinary action against Sifuna, arguing that his conduct undermines party unity and collective decisions.
