Police Launch Manhunt for Dandora Man Suspected of Killing Teenage Daughter

Police in Nairobi have launched an intensive manhunt for a man suspected of killing his teenage daughter following an alleged violent assault at their home in Dandora.

The victim, identified as Shirleen Nyangweso, was a Grade Eight pupil.

According to preliminary investigations, the teenager is believed to have died after being severely beaten by her father, reportedly in the presence of her stepmother.

The incident has sparked outrage among residents and renewed calls for stronger protection of children against domestic violence.

The girl’s biological mother recounted that the events leading to Shirleen’s death began during the December school holidays.

She said she had been married to the suspect for 14 years before they separated, after which custody of their children was granted to the father.

Shirleen reportedly went to visit her mother on December 26 and stayed with her until December 31. The mother stated that the suspect later came to pick up the girl following a disagreement between them.

According to the mother, she received a call after Shirleen returned to her father’s home. The call was answered by the stepmother, after which Shirleen was briefly allowed to speak.

“My daughter told me she had been beaten by her dad, but she asked me to go and pick her up the following day,” the mother said.

Investigators were told that the alleged beating was meant to punish the girl for visiting her biological mother without permission. Reports indicate that Shirleen was repeatedly caned inside the Dandora house.

Tragically, the child is said to have collapsed later that night due to the severity of her injuries. The suspect allegedly rushed her to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital but abandoned her there before fleeing. Hospital staff later confirmed that the girl was already dead on arrival.

On January 1 at around 7am, the suspect allegedly called the girl’s mother and asked her to meet him at the hospital, claiming that the child was in critical condition.

“He made sure I arrived at the hospital before he switched off his phone. Since then, his phone has been unreachable,” the mother told investigators.

Upon arrival at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, the mother was confronted with the devastating reality of her daughter’s condition. She described seeing severe injuries on Shirleen’s body, including a badly swollen head and blood on her forehead.

“She had swelling on her hands, as if they had been restrained, and there were marks on her legs,” the mother said, adding that the injuries suggested prolonged assault.

The stepmother, who is believed to have witnessed the incident, reportedly told investigators that the suspect did not intend to kill the girl and that the incident was accidental. However, a postmortem examination contradicted that claim.

An autopsy conducted on the body revealed that Shirleen died from multiple traumatic injuries affecting her head, chest, and other parts of the body, consistent with severe physical assault.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have since taken over the case and are pursuing the suspect, who remains at large.

Police have urged members of the public with information on his whereabouts to report to the nearest police station.

The killing has drawn condemnation from neighbours and community members, who described the incident as heartbreaking and unacceptable.

“We must help the mother lay her child to rest, and then ensure justice is done for Shirleen,” said one resident.

Child rights advocates have also weighed in, calling for tougher action against perpetrators of domestic violence and increased monitoring of child welfare cases, especially where custody disputes are involved.
