U.S. Reacts After Drone Strike Kills UN Peacekeepers in Sudan

The United States has strongly condemned a drone strike on a United Nations base in Kadugli, Sudan, that killed six Bangladeshi peacekeepers and left several others injured.

The attack took place amid ongoing conflict in the country, raising concerns about the safety of UN personnel working in the region.

In a statement issued on Monday, December 15, 2025, the U.S. Senior Advisor for Arab and African Affairs described the strike as a serious violation of international law.

He said that such attacks threaten global peacekeeping efforts and undermine the work of those trying to protect civilians.

“This attack on a UN base shows a complete disregard for international efforts to maintain peace and security,” the statement said.

The United States also warned all parties involved in Sudan’s conflict against targeting UN staff. The advisor emphasized that peacekeepers are crucial in safeguarding civilians and supporting humanitarian operations. The U.S. called for an immediate stop to fighting and full access for humanitarian aid across Sudan.

The civil war in Sudan, ongoing since April 2023, began as a struggle for power between two rival leaders.

General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF), and General Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo, commander of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), have been at odds. There have been accusations that Kenya is backing the RSF, but Nairobi has denied these claims.

In response to the attack, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, called it a “reprehensible act” that could disrupt efforts to bring peace and stability to Sudan.

In a press release, Youssouf expressed his condolences to the families of the slain peacekeepers and wished the injured a fast recovery. He also called for the perpetrators to be identified and brought to justice swiftly.

The attack comes months after U.S. President Donald Trump announced that the United States would intervene to help end the civil war at the request of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

President Trump said the conflict had led to “tremendous atrocities” and a severe humanitarian crisis, stressing the importance of resolving the conflict to maintain regional security. Sudan’s Red Sea coastline, he noted, is of strategic importance to Saudi Arabia.

Since then, the U.S. has closely monitored the situation in Sudan, offering support aimed at ending the violence. The drone strike has highlighted the dangers faced by peacekeepers and the urgent need for stronger protection measures.

The United Nations has consistently called for all factions in Sudan to respect international humanitarian law.

Peacekeeping missions remain vital in the region, helping deliver aid, protect civilians, and support local communities affected by the conflict.
