Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga on Sunday led Orange Democratic Movement leaders in a fundraising drive to support funeral arrangements for the late former Lugari Member of Parliament, Cyrus Jirongo.
The event was held at Jirongo’s home and drew senior party officials and elected leaders from across the region.
The ODM team said the exercise was meant to stand with the family during a difficult moment and to help ease the burden of funeral preparations.
Party leaders donated food items, including bulls and fish, to be used during the burial ceremonies.
They also agreed to raise additional funds to cater for other needs linked to the funeral.
Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera officially received the contributions on behalf of the family. The fundraising saw several leaders make cash donations.
Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi set the pace with a contribution of Ksh100,000. Suna East MP Junet Mohamed followed with Ksh200,000.
Migori Woman Representative Rosa Buyu donated Ksh50,000, while Kakamega Woman Representative and gubernatorial hopeful Elsie Muhanda gave Ksh200,000.
Nominated Senator Catherine Muma added Ksh50,000. Governor Wanga closed the drive with a personal contribution of Ksh300,000.
During the gathering, leaders described Jirongo as a national political figure who played a key role in shaping multiparty politics.
They noted his influence within the Luhya community and beyond, saying his voice and presence in national debates would be missed.
The fundraiser came days after Jirongo died in a tragic road accident along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway near the Kericho area.
He was driving back to Nairobi when his car was involved in a head-on collision with a passenger bus shortly after rejoining the highway from a petrol station.
