Raila's Adopted Son to Give Youth Ksh50,000 Each in New Program

Oketch Salah, the adopted son of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, has announced a major empowerment initiative aimed at supporting young activists in Kenya.

The program, set to roll out in early 2026, will target 10 members of Jacaranda Bunge la Wananchi, offering financial and material assistance to boost their entrepreneurial and leadership skills.

During an engagement with members of Bunge la Wananchi on Friday, December 26, Oketch outlined his plans to provide Ksh50,000 each to five men and five women from the grassroots movement.

Beyond cash support, the beneficiaries will also receive motorcycles for men and hairdressing equipment for women, ensuring practical tools for starting and expanding their businesses.

“Met with Jacaranda Bunge la Wananchi to strengthen leadership for greater impact. Also presented a Ksh1 million New Year gift hamper to members present,” Oketch said in a statement.

“Pledged an empowerment program rolling out early next year for 10 members, including Ksh50,000 startup funds, motorcycles for men, and hairdressing equipment for women.”

Bunge la Wananchi, a civic and grassroots activism group in Kenya, engages communities through public forums where issues affecting ordinary citizens are discussed and debated.

These include governance, accountability, social justice, and economic empowerment. Through this initiative,

Oketch Salah seeks to further encourage youth involvement in leadership while also helping them establish sustainable businesses.

The initiative reflects the late Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s own commitment to social welfare and youth empowerment.

During the 2022 general election campaign, Raila promised a social protection program aimed at providing Ksh6,000 monthly to households across the country.

His vision was to support up to 1.5 million households, which would have required a monthly allocation of Ksh9 billion under his government.

Earlier this year, Nominated Senator Beatrice Oyomo urged President William Ruto to honor Raila’s campaign promise, highlighting the need to extend social protection measures to Kenyans under the current broad-based government.

Oyomo pointed out that fulfilling such pledges would align with ongoing efforts to uplift communities and promote equitable development.

Oketch Salah’s empowerment program is designed not only to provide immediate financial support but also to nurture skills and entrepreneurial capacity among young leaders.

By supplying motorcycles, cash, and specialized equipment, he hopes to ensure that recipients can take practical steps toward self-sufficiency while contributing positively to their communities.

Community members and youth activists welcomed the announcement, viewing it as a continuation of Raila Odinga’s legacy of championing youth initiatives.

Many said the program would encourage young people to actively participate in civic engagement and economic ventures, reinforcing the importance of grassroots development in Kenya’s governance landscape.
