NEWS JUST IN: Autopsy Reveals What Killed Jirongo

A postmortem examination has confirmed that former Cabinet Minister and Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo died from severe chest injuries sustained in a road accident in Naivasha last weekend.

According to pathologists who conducted the autopsy, Jirongo suffered fatal crush injuries to the chest caused by blunt force trauma during the crash.

The findings were released on Wednesday after the examination was carried out at Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi.

Government pathologist Johansen Oduor, together with pathologists appointed by the family, addressed the media and said the injuries were extensive and unsurvivable.

They revealed that the impact of the collision caused serious damage to vital organs, including a perforation of the heart.

“The deceased sustained severe injuries to the chest and abdomen,” the pathology report stated.

“There was massive trauma, including multiple rib fractures, bleeding into the chest cavity, and a perforated heart.”

In addition to the chest injuries, the former lawmaker also suffered several fractures. The report showed that Jirongo had two fractures on his right hand as well as fractures on both lower limbs, pointing to the force of the impact during the crash.

Doctors noted that the chest injuries were the main cause of death, with crush injuries extending into the abdominal region. Internal bleeding was also observed, further confirming the severity of the trauma.

Family doctor Martin Wanyoike, who was present during the postmortem, said the injuries were incompatible with survival. He explained that the damage to the heart alone was enough to cause immediate death.

“As a heart specialist, I can confirm the injury to the heart was extremely severe,” Wanyoike said.

“Such injuries do not allow survival. We deeply sympathise with the family during this difficult time.”

The fatal crash occurred in the early hours of Saturday, December 13, along the Nairobi–Naivasha highway.

Investigators say Jirongo was driving his vehicle when it collided head-on with a public service bus belonging to Climax Company Limited.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has since obtained CCTV footage from a nearby petrol station, which has helped piece together the final moments before the crash.

According to the footage, Jirongo drove into the petrol station at around 2:18am while coming from the Nairobi direction.

He did not stop to refuel but instead paused briefly at the station’s exit. Moments later, he made a right turn, appearing to head back toward Nairobi.

Seconds after the turn, at about 2:19am, a PSV bus rammed into his vehicle. The impact was so strong that Jirongo’s car was pushed nearly 25 metres from the point of collision, while the bus came to a stop roughly 50 metres away.

Police have re-summoned the bus driver as investigations continue. Detectives are also reviewing additional CCTV footage and mechanical reports as part of efforts to establish the full circumstances surrounding the crash.

The DCI has further indicated that they are retracing Jirongo’s movements before the accident. Officers are recording statements from individuals who interacted with him earlier that night, including people present at a meeting held at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi.

Authorities say the investigation remains active, with multiple lines of inquiry being pursued to rule out any other contributing factors.

Cyrus Jirongo was a prominent political figure who served as Minister for Rural Development and represented Lugari Constituency in Parliament.

His death has sparked national mourning, with leaders and Kenyans from across the political divide paying tribute to his contribution to public service.
