A sombre mood has engulfed a family in Nandi County after a young woman lost her mother just days after celebrating her graduation.
The tragic incident has left the recent graduate, identified as Chelee, in deep pain and shock, as the woman who worked tirelessly to educate her passed away shortly after witnessing her daughter’s academic success.
According to family members and close friends, Chelee’s mother, Mercy Sawa, had dedicated her entire life to ensuring her children received a good education.
From pre-unit classes all the way to university, Mercy struggled day and night to pay school fees, provide food, and meet other basic needs.
Despite facing many financial challenges, she never gave up on her children’s dreams.
Mercy Sawa was well known in her community as a hardworking and resilient woman.
She worked as a casual laborer, taking up any available job to earn money for her family.
Many people who knew her say she often sacrificed her own comfort so that her children could stay in school.
Her greatest joy, according to relatives, was seeing her daughter complete university and graduate successfully.
Sadly, this joy was short-lived. Just a few days after attending Chelee’s graduation ceremony, Mercy fell ill.
Reports indicate that she was suffering from asthma-related complications.
Her health deteriorated rapidly, forcing her to seek medical attention.
Despite efforts by doctors and nurses to save her life, Mercy passed away while receiving treatment in hospital on Saturday, 13 December 2025.
Her sudden death has left Chelee devastated.
Friends say the young graduate is struggling to come to terms with the loss, especially because her mother had lived long enough to see her graduate but did not live to enjoy the fruits of her hard work.
The family described the situation as extremely painful, noting that
Mercy died while still waiting to see her daughter officially receive her final results and begin her career.
