Karua Reveals Raila’s Discomfort With Ruto on Her Last Conversation With Former ODM Leader

The People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader, Martha Karua, has opened up about her last discussion with the late Raila Odinga, former ODM leader, revealing the late politician’s unease over his association with President William Ruto.

In an interview with a local TV station on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, Karua stated that Raila expressed discomfort regarding his continued support for the broad-based government led by Ruto.

“I was not among the people he called while he was in India for treatment, but we had spoken before he traveled. I asked him if it bothered him to support a government that kills its own people. I encouraged him to leave Ruto’s government. I was confident it would collapse without his backing,” she disclosed.

Final Conversation.

Karua emphasized that she did not pressure Raila for an immediate answer. However, during what turned out to be their last correspondence, Raila shared his concerns.

“He said he was very uncomfortable. I was traveling to the US around July 8, and he told me we would talk when he returned. Unfortunately, he fell sick before we could continue our discussion and later passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2025,” Karua recounted.

Paying Tribute

Karua, who was part of the delegation that visited Kang’o ka Jaramogi to pay her last respects, praised Raila’s lifelong commitment to Kenya. She also shared her personal experience of receiving the news of his death.

“It was shocking. I had just landed in Entebbe on my way to Kampala for Besigye’s case. I had to call Raila’s team to confirm the news. I drafted a condolence message, but the government delayed its release, so I instructed my team to send it at 11 a.m. I then visited Mama Ida at Raila’s residence to offer my condolences the same day,” she said.

Karua described Raila as a dedicated leader who fought for Kenya despite his human flaws. “We mourn him, but more importantly, we celebrate him for his lifelong work. He and his family did great work for this country, and that is what we honor,” she concluded.

Legacy of Raila Odinga

Raila’s death left a leadership gap in the opposition and created uncertainty within the broad-based government arrangement with President Ruto. Karua’s revelations underscore the late leader’s internal conflict and concern over the direction of Kenya’s political landscape.
