Gachagua’s Support for Kalonzo Raises Questions About Future Political Plans

Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa has sparked discussions about the political intentions of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua after suggesting that his support for Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka may have a hidden agenda.

According to Barasa, Gachagua’s backing of Kalonzo ahead of the 2027 elections is influenced by his ambitions for 2032.

In a post on social media on Monday, December 22, 2025, Barasa said that Gachagua is likely aware that President William Ruto will easily win against Kalonzo in 2027.

He believes Gachagua’s involvement is not about helping the united opposition win in 2027, but rather about securing support from the Kamba community for his own future presidential bid.

"Gachagua is quietly positioning himself to capture the Kamba vote for 2032," Barasa wrote.

"He understands that defeating Ruto in 2027 is unlikely, so his current support for Kalonzo is strategic and personal."

Barasa’s comments reflect a growing conversation about political alliances in Kenya. Many analysts note that opposition coalitions are often influenced by future ambitions rather than immediate electoral goals.

In this case, Gachagua’s support appears to be less about defeating the incumbent president and more about strengthening his own influence within the Kamba community.

Earlier this month, former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama also voiced similar concerns. Speaking in Kwale on December 15, Muthama warned Kalonzo to reconsider his approach, stating that the alliance with Gachagua could be more beneficial to Gachagua than to Kalonzo.

Muthama stressed that Kenya’s political landscape is broader than tribal affiliations, emphasizing that leaders cannot rely solely on votes from one community to win national elections.

"Kalonzo needs to focus on a national strategy rather than relying on tribal support," Muthama said.

"Votes from one community alone cannot secure the presidency. He must plan carefully and seek guidance for a strategy that works for all Kenyans."

Muthama also questioned the credibility and capability of some members of the United Opposition, suggesting that Kalonzo should ensure his allies are both trustworthy and capable.

He highlighted the importance of unity, competence, and vision in any effort to challenge President Ruto’s administration in the 2027 elections.

The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), together with Kalonzo, has emerged as a leading force in the growing opposition coalition.

This alliance includes notable figures such as Martha Karua, Justin Muturi, and leaders from the DAP-K party, including George Natembeya and Eugene Wamalwa. The coalition’s goal is to present a united front capable of challenging the ruling government in 2027.

Political observers say that while alliances are essential in Kenyan politics, voters are increasingly interested in leaders’ integrity, vision, and ability to deliver.

Alignments built on personal ambitions rather than public service may not resonate with the electorate. In this context, Gachagua’s strategy could attract scrutiny as the election approaches.
