Fuel Station Attendant Recounts Horrific Moment Cyrus Jirongo Died

The tragic death of former Lugari MP and businessman Cyrus Jirongo continues to raise questions, with new details emerging from a fuel station attendant who witnessed the final moments before the fatal crash.

Newspaper reports published on December 14 reveal a chilling account from the attendant who was among the last people to see Jirongo alive.

The story, which has drawn national attention, was inspired by earlier reports that carefully pieced together the events of that night.

According to the attendant, the accident happened shortly after 2:00am along the Nairobi–Nakuru highway near Karai, Naivasha. Jirongo was driving alone in his white Mercedes-Benz when he entered a petrol station from the wrong direction.

The attendant recalled that the former MP slowly drove towards the fuel pumps but did not ask for fuel. Instead, he paused briefly, turned his car around, and headed back towards the highway. At the time, nothing appeared unusual, and the station was quiet.

Moments after Jirongo left the fuel station, the calm was shattered by a loud bang.

“I heard a very heavy impact, unlike anything else,” the attendant reportedly said. When he rushed towards the road, he found that Jirongo’s vehicle had collided head-on with a Climax bus travelling in the opposite direction.

The impact was severe. The Mercedes-Benz was badly damaged and had been dragged several metres from where the collision occurred. The bus, which was carrying dozens of passengers, eventually came to a stop a short distance ahead.

The attendant said he ran to the wrecked car and tried to open the door, but it was locked. When he looked through the window, he saw the driver slumped over the steering wheel, motionless, with visible injuries to the head.

Realising the seriousness of the situation, the attendant immediately called the police emergency line. He also tried to stop passing vehicles for help. While some drivers sped past, one eventually stopped, and together they attempted to assist, but Jirongo did not respond.

Bus driver Tirus Kamau later confirmed parts of the attendant’s account. He said the accident happened suddenly and left him no time to avoid the collision. He explained that traffic had slowed slightly in his lane, and the Mercedes-Benz appeared to veer into his path.

Police officers arrived at the scene and took control as shocked locals gathered nearby. Jirongo’s body was taken to Naivasha Sub-County Hospital mortuary before being transferred to Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi at the request of his family.

Both the bus and the Mercedes-Benz were towed to Naivasha Police Station, where investigators began examining the wreckage. Officers sealed off the vehicle and restricted access as detectives prepared to take over the case.

Authorities have confirmed that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident. Conflicting accounts from witnesses have added to public curiosity, with many Kenyans calling for a transparent and thorough probe.

Cyrus Jirongo was a well-known political figure, remembered for his influence during the 1990s and his later role as Lugari MP. His sudden death has left family, friends, and the nation in shock.

The fuel station attendant’s account has given the public a clearer picture of the final moments before tragedy struck. It also serves as a painful reminder of how quickly life can change, even during the quiet hours of the night.
