Former Senator Khaniri Reveals Details Of His Last Phone Call To Jirongo Hours Before Death

Former Vihiga County Senator George Khaniri has revealed that he may have been among the last people to speak with the late Cyrus Jirongo before his untimely death.

Khaniri shared his account during Jirongo’s burial ceremony held today, in Lumakanda, Lugari Constituency, Kakamega County.

Khaniri stated that his last phone call with Jirongo took place late at night, mere hours before the unfortunate car accident on the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway that resulted in Jirongo's death.

“I believe I was one of the last individuals to speak with him over the phone,” Khaniri shared with those in attendance at the memorial.

He mentioned that the call lasted approximately three minutes, during which Jirongo communicated in a warm and comforting manner.

Khaniri recalled asking Jirongo about his location, to which the late politician responded that he was at a spot known as Oasis in Karen, Nairobi.

Later, Khaniri drove past that area and noticed Jirongo seated with National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula and two other associates.

Although he saw them, Khaniri chose not to stop because he had other obligations.

Looking back on that evening, Khaniri expressed doubts about whether anyone else had spoken to Jirongo after their call.

“I don’t think anyone else contacted him, unless they were with him already,” he remarked, eliciting a heartfelt reaction from the crowd.

He also noted that Jirongo had seen him drive by earlier that night, which clarified Jirongo’s comments during their conversation.

Khaniri’s account provided mourners with a personal insight into Jirongo’s final moments, highlighting the tragic nature of his passing.

The funeral gathered a significant number of political figures, family members, and friends who came together to celebrate the late MP’s legacy and his contributions to both national and local politics.
