EACC arrests Police Inspector, two traffic officers for allegedly extorting bribes from motorists along Kisumu-Kisii Highway

Detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Saturday, December 27, arrested three traffic officers, including a police inspector, for allegedly soliciting and receiving bribes from motorists along the busy Kisumu-Kisii Highway at Sondu.

According to the commission, the arrests followed multiple complaints from motorists about rampant extortion by traffic officers operating along the highway.

The suspects were caught demanding bribes without conducting any vehicle inspections or enforcing traffic regulations. Upon arrest, they were found in possession of cash believed to be proceeds of corruption.

The officers were first processed at the EACC’s Nyanza regional office in Kisumu before being escorted to Kisumu Railways and Ports Police Station, where they were booked pending further investigations.

This comes just days after two other traffic officers were arrested along the Likoni-Lungalunga road for similar offences, raising concerns about widespread corruption among law enforcement officers.

Similar operations have recently taken place along the Nairobi-Nyeri-Embu Highway, resulting in multiple arrests.

The commission stated that it continues to scale up intelligence gathering and surveillance, targeting sectors prone to corruption, and urged the public to report incidents of bribery to strengthen accountability in public service.

EACC noted that traffic officers often exploit high volumes of road users, particularly during the festive season, to extort motorists over overspeeding and carrying excess passengers.
