DPP Orders Fresh Probe Into Death of Gospel Singer Betty Bayo

The death of popular gospel singer Betty Bayo has taken a new twist after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) ordered the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to carry out a full probe into the circumstances surrounding her passing.

In a letter dated Tuesday, the DPP, through Deputy Director Jacinta Nyamosi, directed detectives to open investigations and submit their findings within seven days.

The decision follows growing concerns raised by the late singer’s family, who say several questions about her death remain unanswered.

The probe was initiated after a formal request by Bayo’s mother, Joyce Wairimu, who petitioned the DPP to order an inquest.

In her letter, Wairimu questioned the events leading up to her daughter’s death, insisting that the family was not satisfied with the explanations given so far.

According to the family, Betty Bayo did not show signs of serious illness in the days before her death.

They also claim she had no known underlying medical condition that could have led to her sudden passing.

The family’s suspicions were further heightened after they were allegedly denied access to the autopsy report. They say repeated efforts to obtain the document were unsuccessful, raising concerns about transparency.

Betty Bayo, whose real name was Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua, died on Monday, November 10, 2025. Initial reports indicated that she succumbed to cancer after a period of illness.

However, conflicting accounts have since emerged, particularly regarding claims that she was battling leukaemia.

Family members argue that her condition deteriorated rapidly at the beginning of November, describing the sudden decline as unusual and troubling.

They insist that the speed at which her health worsened does not fully align with the explanations they were given.

Another issue raised by the family relates to her burial. Her mother claims the burial was conducted hurriedly, which she believes may have been intended to conceal crucial information about what really happened before her death.

These concerns prompted the DPP to conclude that a formal investigation is necessary to establish the true cause of death and address the family’s claims.

The DCI is now expected to collect evidence, record statements, and review medical records as part of the probe.

Signs that the singer’s health was deteriorating first became public in August 2025, when she was admitted to hospital.

At the time, Bayo shared a photo on social media showing her wearing an oxygen mask, sparking concern among fans.

She later explained that the cold weather had affected her health but did not disclose details about her medical condition or any cancer diagnosis.

In the days leading up to her death, reports emerged suggesting that a hospital had allegedly delayed admitting her until a Ksh200,000 deposit was paid.

The claims sparked public outrage, with many questioning access to healthcare for critically ill patients. However, the hospital involved has since denied the allegations.

The DPP believes the investigation will help clarify whether there was any negligence, foul play, or procedural failure in the handling of the singer’s medical care and death.

Betty Bayo was widely known for her hit gospel songs, including 11th Hour, and was celebrated for her strong faith and inspirational music.
