Cyrus Jirongo’s Wife Reveals Last Conversations With Politician Hours Before His Death

The wife of the late former Lugari Member of Parliament, Cyrus Jirongo, has opened up about her final moments with the politician, sharing harrowing details of the day that ended in tragedy.

Speaking publicly for the first time during Jirongo’s memorial service at CITAM Valley Road in Nairobi on Saturday, December 27, Anne Jirongo described how she learned of the accident that claimed her husband’s life and her desperate efforts to reach him.

Anne, one of Jirongo’s three wives, recounted how she had trouble sleeping on the night of December 12.

“Around midnight, I felt something was wrong. At about 3 a.m., I received a call, but it wasn’t Jirongo. The person on the line asked if I knew him, and I told them he was my husband,” she recalled, her voice heavy with emotion.

“At first, I thought it was a prank because Jirongo had no plans to travel that night. It just didn’t make sense,” she added.

The last time Anne saw Jirongo was on December 12, during a brief meeting at a supermarket before he left to visit National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula.

“He called me around 12:30 p.m., and we spoke for about 15 minutes. He called again at 2:30 p.m., asking where I was. When I told him I was at the supermarket, he came to see me. We talked in the car briefly, and he left to go to his office. He said he wanted to ‘dream and build castles’ in his office before visiting the Speaker,” she said.

Later, around 4 p.m., Jirongo called Anne via FaceTime, explaining that he had canceled his office plans and had instead gone home to rest in a chair. “That was the last time I spoke to him,” Anne said.

Tragically, Jirongo died in a road accident along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway early on December 13. His Mercedes-Benz collided with a PSV bus carrying passengers to Western Kenya.

Upon hearing the news, Anne immediately set out for Naivasha with her daughter and friends to try to reach him, only to be told by police that Jirongo had passed away.

The incident has stirred emotions across the country, with leaders and family members mourning the loss of a politician, businessman, and community leader.

Former Speaker Wetang’ula also recounted meeting Jirongo on the evening of December 12 and expressed shock at the sudden accident.

During the memorial service, attendees—including family, political leaders, and friends—celebrated Jirongo as a vibrant leader and visionary businessman.

His contributions to politics, business, and community development were highlighted, with many noting his commitment to peace and unity.

While the cause of the accident has prompted controversy, with some raising questions of possible foul play, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched investigations.

Preliminary autopsy reports revealed that Jirongo died from severe chest injuries.

Jirongo’s death has left a significant void in Kenya’s political landscape. Known for his boldness and independence, he was respected across party lines and regarded as a leader who spoke his mind without fear.

The late MP will be laid to rest at his Lumakanda home in Lugari, Kakamega County, on Tuesday, December 30, 2025.

His passing has been described as a national loss, with many remembering him as both a dynamic politician and a visionary businessman.
