The political temperature in Mt. Kenya has been rising, and the Mbeere North by-election has now become the centre of attention.
According to Senator Joe Nyutu, this is no longer just a local race.
It has grown into a major test for two powerful figures from the region: deputy president Kithure Kindiki and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
The outcome could shape how Mt. Kenya politics will look heading into 2027.
Senator Nyutu argues that much is at stake for Kindiki. For months, leaders from Mt. Kenya East and Mt.
Kenya West have been pushing the idea that the region is politically divided, each side claiming to have its own influence and numbers.
Kindiki has been seen as the main force from the East, while Gachagua is viewed as the face of the West.
But now, the Mbeere North contest threatens to expose whether this east-west narrative has any real strength.
Nyutu believes that if Kindiki fails to deliver the seat for his preferred candidate, it will shake the claims made by Mt. Kenya East leaders.
It will show that Gachagua’s influence runs deeper and wider than many have been willing to admit.
A loss for Kindiki would not be a small political setback. Nyutu warns that it could have long-term consequences.
With 2027 drawing closer, the big question in the Kenya Kwanza coalition is who will be President Ruto’s running mate.
Kindiki has often been mentioned as a top contender. However, a weak performance in a key by-election like Mbeere North could weaken his standing.
It may give his rivals room to argue that he cannot influence his own backyard, making Gachagua appear stronger and more reliable politically.
