Wavinya Ndeti Boycotts Ruto Visit, Accuses President of Disrespecting Kamba Community

Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti has openly criticized President William Ruto over remarks he made during his recent tour of the Ukambani region, saying they were disrespectful to local leaders and to the Kamba community.

Speaking on Friday, the governor explained that she deliberately skipped the President’s event in Machakos because she believes respect for her community must be upheld at all times.

Governor Ndeti stated that her decision was a matter of principle rather than politics, emphasizing that the dignity of the Kamba people cannot be negotiated or compromised.

“Respect for the Kamba community is non-negotiable. Any insult or disregard is unacceptable,” she said.

“Disrespect toward any community erodes trust, weakens leadership, and undermines responsible governance.”

Her remarks came in defense of Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, whom she described as a leader known for diplomacy, integrity, and restraint.

Ndeti argued that perceived attacks against Kalonzo were an affront to the entire Kamba community.

“When you insult Kalonzo, you are insulting all of us,” she added.

“The Kalonzo I know would never visit Sugoi and respond with insults because he is a man guided by faith and humility.”

Ndeti explained that attending the President’s function in Machakos under those circumstances would have been inappropriate.

She insisted that loyalty to her community supersedes protocol when disrespect is involved.

“Ruto was in my area today, but I chose not to attend,” she revealed.

“If someone disrespects my leader, I see no reason to sit with them. I am a daughter of this community. If my people are insulted, I have no business with you, even if you are the President.”

The controversy stems from remarks President Ruto made while addressing residents during his four-day development tour of the region.

The President appeared to criticize certain Ukambani leaders and political figures in the opposition, comments that sparked tension among local leaders.

During the tour, Ruto suggested that the region had been held back by what he referred to as leaders lacking direction and focus.

He accused unnamed politicians of misleading residents and engaging in unproductive politics. His remarks were widely interpreted as targeting Kalonzo Musyoka and other opposition leaders.

The President had begun his Ukambani tour on Wednesday, November 12, visiting Makueni, Kitui, and Machakos Counties.

He commissioned infrastructure projects including the Kasikeu and Mikuyu Bridges, distributed title deeds in Makueni, and launched the Emali–Ukia Road in Kibwezi West.

Ruto defended his mission in the region, saying his administration is committed to accelerating development and ensuring all counties benefit from national projects.

“We are implementing projects that unlock the economic potential of rural communities,” the President said during one event.

“Our goal is to ensure no part of the country is left behind.”
