Traffic at Standstill as Nairobi Matatu Driver Spots Stranded Man On A Cold Morning, Helps Him

Nairobi, Kenya — A simple act of kindness has gone viral online after a Nairobi matatu driver, Erick Mwati, gave his shirt and shoes to a man stranded in traffic, leaving the community deeply moved.

The heartwarming moment, captured unknowingly by another motorist, has since inspired countless Kenyans on social media.

The incident occurred during the morning rush hour when traffic had slowed to a crawl. Mwati, driving his matatu, noticed a man walking barefoot and without a shirt along the roadside.

Rather than continuing on, the driver took an extraordinary step of generosity.

In the now-viral TikTok clip, Mwati is seen opening his matatu door, removing his blue T-shirt, and offering it to the man. He also provided a pair of open shoes.

The man gratefully accepted the items, putting them on as he stood next to the vehicle. After slipping on the clothes, he walked to the pavement, prayed, and made a sign of the cross, visibly moved by the gesture.

“In the midst of traffic, I saw humanity. May God bless this driver,” the motorist who recorded the video captioned.

The motorist, identified on social media as @_lil_carxy, shared the clip, praising Mwati for his patience and generosity.

“He tilted his seat, removed his shirt and shoes, and waited for the man to dress—all while stuck in traffic. It was so touching, I had to record it,” he said.

Speaking to TUKO.co.ke, Boobie Adventures, the matatu company that employs Mwati, expressed pride in his actions. A company representative said,

“Erick did something remarkable. He gave what he had to help someone in need, showing compassion and selflessness. He’s an example to all of us.”

After the video gained traction, Mwati himself responded to the online attention, emphasizing that his act was motivated purely by compassion.

“I gave what I had from the bottom of my heart. May God bless him. Thanks to the brother who recorded it. I never imagined it would draw this much attention,” Mwati said.

The driver’s humility has been widely applauded, with social media users praising his kindness and encouraging others to emulate his example.

Many have also suggested providing support to the man who received the items, ensuring he remains cared for in his vulnerable state.

This is not the first time Nairobi’s matatu drivers have shown remarkable acts of humanity. Earlier this year, a matatu crew received public acclaim for helping an ill woman reach home safely.

Such acts reflect a broader culture of community care, often overlooked in the hustle of daily urban life.

“Stories like Erick’s remind us that even in our busiest moments, compassion can make a difference. It’s heartwarming to see members of the public taking note and spreading the positivity.” A social media user commented.

The clip has sparked a wave of social media admiration. Users have shared prayers, virtual praise, and even offers to reward Mwati for his generosity. Many note that small acts of kindness, especially in the bustling city environment, resonate more powerfully than ever.

“This is what humanity looks like,” one user commented.
“He didn’t have to, but he chose to help. We need more people like him.”
