President William Ruto said the recent parliamentary by-elections sent a clear warning to opposition parties, as candidates from the ruling coalition won in several important areas.
On Friday, President Ruto mentioned that Kenyan voters rejected what he called "hollow slogans" and supported politics focused on development.
"The people of Kenya have spoken through the ballot," Ruto told reporters. "They have turned away from campaigns without real plans, built on empty talk and tribal divisions."
Key Constituency Results
The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and its coalition partners won several seats in Thursday's elections. The closest race was in Mbeere North, where UDA candidate Leo Wamuthende beat independent candidate Newton Kariuki by 494 votes.
Other important results included:
- Malava Constituency: UDA's David Ndakwa won against DAP-K candidate Seth Panyako
- Kasipul Constituency: ODM's Boyd Were had a strong victory
- Banisa Constituency: UDA's Ahmed Maalim Hassan won by a large margin
These results boost President Ruto's "broad-based government" coalition, now including several former opposition parties. Analysts see these outcomes as significant for the changing political scene ahead of the 2027 general elections.
"The ruling coalition has shown it can win votes in different regions," said political analyst Dr. Grace Mwangi. "This should worry opposition groups who need to rethink their approach."
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) reported that voting went smoothly, despite some minor logistical issues in certain areas.
"Overall, we are pleased with how these by-elections were conducted," said IEBC chairperson Irene Cherop in an official statement.
The by-elections marked the first major test for the new electoral commission and provided insights into current voter opinions across the country.
