The Catholic community in Kenya is mourning the passing of Bishop Phillip Sulumeti, a revered servant of God who dedicated his life to spreading the Gospel and guiding the faithful.
The late Bishop Sulumeti, who served as the first Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Kakamega, passed away while undergoing treatment at Nairobi Hospital after a short illness.
His death was officially confirmed by Bishop Joseph Obanyi, the current Bishop of Kakamega Diocese, who described him as a humble and visionary leader who played a crucial role in the growth of the Church in Western Kenya.
Born in 1937, Bishop Sulumeti was ordained a priest in 1966, marking the beginning of an illustrious career in pastoral service. In 1972, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Kisumu and later became the Bishop of Kakamega in 1978, a position he held for over three decades.
Under his leadership, the diocese experienced tremendous spiritual and infrastructural development. He spearheaded the establishment of parishes, schools, and health facilities, ensuring that the Church’s mission of faith and service reached even the most remote communities.
Bishop Sulumeti was not only a spiritual leader but also a strong advocate for education and social justice. He encouraged young people to pursue academic excellence while upholding moral values grounded in Christian teachings.
His colleagues and parishioners remember him as a compassionate shepherd who led by example, always emphasizing peace, unity, and love.
The news of his demise has left many in deep sorrow, but his legacy of faith and service will continue to inspire generations. Funeral arrangements are ongoing, and details of his final resting place will be announced soon. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
