Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has for the first time revealed why he did not attend Raila Odinga’s state funeral at Nyayo Stadium and Parliament Buildings.
The political leader claims he received intelligence that he was being targeted in a plot orchestrated by the government.
He says plainclothes agents were allegedly planned to attack him and blame the Luo community, a move he feared would spark tribal tension.
Speaking in an interview with Inooro TV and Wimwaro Radio on November 16, Gachagua said his absence was not out of disrespect for the late leader.
“I was ready to attend Raila's funeral, but I was warned by police officers that there was a risk of being attacked. They said the government planned to use plainclothes officers to harm me and blame it on people from Nyanza to stir conflict,” he explained.
Gachagua also referenced previous attacks, including incidents in Limuru and Kasarani earlier this year, and an attack on his return from the United States in August.
Considering these threats, he decided it was safer to stay away from the state funeral and avoid any politically charged situation that could lead to violence.
Despite missing the official events, Gachagua confirmed he still intends to pay his respects to the Odinga family.
He said he has communicated with Raila Odinga’s youngest child, Winnie Odinga, about plans to visit Kango Ka Jaramogi and Opoda Farm in early December, following his engagements in Mbeere North constituency.
“I will visit Opoda Farm with a high-level delegation to mourn Raila Odinga. Elders advised that since we have reached out to other communities, we should also show respect to the Luo community,” he said.
Gachagua emphasized that his decision was guided by the advice of Kikuyu elders, considering his stature in national politics. He stressed that there is no animosity between him and the late Raila Odinga.
“While I was not close to Raila personally, I have always respected his leadership. I also paid my condolences publicly and will continue to honor his legacy,” he said.
He expressed admiration for Raila as a political leader who nurtured capable leaders and built a strong team.
“Raila’s commitment to quality leadership inspired me. I intend to shape my Democracy for the Citizens Party in a way that continues his focus on mentoring and empowering leaders,” Gachagua added.
On the funeral itself, Gachagua cast doubt on the sincerity of some attendees, suggesting that not all who appeared to mourn Raila were genuine friends.
He singled out Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka as a true ally, highlighting his consistent support for Raila during the 2013, 2017, and 2022 elections.
Gachagua’s planned visit to Bondo comes after Raila Odinga Junior invited Kenyans to visit Kang’o Ka Jaramogi and pay tribute to his late father. Raila Junior encouraged inclusivity, welcoming everyone regardless of tribe or political affiliation.
This stance contrasts with earlier remarks by ODM officials who declared Gachagua unwelcome, following controversial comments by Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga that appeared to celebrate Raila’s death.
The former deputy president made it clear that his upcoming visit is a gesture of unity and respect.
“We are going to mourn together and show that there is no hostility between our communities,” he said.
