"Nitakujengea Nyumba Smart" Heartbroken Kisumu Mum Shares Graduate Daughter's Promise To Her Before Her Death

Kisumu, Kenya — A Kisumu mother is grieving the tragic loss of her 23-year-old daughter, Cecilia Achieng, who died shortly after alighting from a taxi near Ruiru, Kiambu County.

The young woman had just graduated from Mount Kenya University three months ago and was described by her family as the household’s greatest hope and beloved lastborn.

According to her mother, Achieng was a compassionate and selfless daughter who dreamed of building her own house once she secured a job.

“She was my lastborn, who loved everyone. She never liked seeing anyone suffer. She promised me that after finishing school, she would build me a beautiful house,” her mother recounted, her voice heavy with grief.

The fatal incident occurred around midnight. Online cab driver Patrick Muthami, based in Nairobi, received a ride request from a client named Ronald.

The driver was asked to pick up two women, though only one, later identified as Achieng, would be going home to Juja.

A few minutes later, Achieng and her friend Sally appeared, reportedly under the influence of alcohol. During the journey, the driver explained, Achieng became unruly and demanded to leave the vehicle.

Muthami called Ronald, who spoke briefly to Achieng on the phone. Despite his guidance, she insisted on leaving the cab, stating she would make her way home on her own.
Muthami obliged, letting her out. Tragically, while walking back to Ronald’s house, Achieng was struck by a moving vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

“It was a sudden and shocking loss. She had her whole life ahead of her,” said her mother, still in mourning.

Cecilia Achieng had been the youngest in her family and a symbol of hope. Her recent graduation had been celebrated as a major achievement, and her family had pinned their aspirations on her success.

Friends described her as kind-hearted, selfless, and generous — someone who always put others before herself.

The young woman’s death has left her family and community in deep sorrow, mourning not only the loss of a loved one but also the unfulfilled dreams she carried.

Achieng’s death is among several recent incidents highlighting the dangers of late-night road travel in Kenya.

In a similar tragedy, a Nairobi-based TikTok user, Alexalevins (Lesley), lost her life in a hit-and-run accident on the Thika Superhighway, prompting widespread mourning among online communities.

Experts have emphasized the need for safer late-night commuting options and better enforcement of road safety measures to prevent such losses.

News of Achieng’s passing quickly spread through social media. Friends and acquaintances expressed condolences and shared stories of her kindness and generosity.

Many also urged authorities to improve road safety and to educate drivers and passengers about safe travel practices, especially for young people returning home at night.

A GoFundMe page was also established by relatives to support her family during this difficult period, aiming to help with funeral expenses and provide some financial relief.
Achieng will be remembered as a bright, loving, and ambitious young woman who brought joy to her family and community.

Her mother’s recollection of her promise to build a house serves as a poignant reminder of dreams left unfulfilled too soon.

“She wanted to make life better for all of us. Losing her has left a void that nothing can fill,” her mother said.
