The 39-year-old father of two believed he would soon be back on his feet, providing for his family as he had always done. But life has changed in ways he never expected.
Since losing his job, James has stayed at home while his wife runs a small but successful tomato business. At first, their daily routine felt unchanged.
His wife still woke up early, prepared meals, tidied the house, and left everything in order before heading to the market.
James spent his days searching for work and looking after their children, aged four and six.
As time went by, however, the balance in the household shifted. His wife, now the sole breadwinner, began asking James to help with cooking, cleaning, and even laundry.
She often returned home tired and expected him to handle more responsibilities.
For James, this has been difficult to accept.
“Sometimes she tells me to wash her clothes or cook dinner. I feel embarrassed,” he admitted in a video shared online.
“What would neighbours think if they walked in and found me scrubbing floors or stirring pots?”
Although he appreciates his wife’s effort in paying bills, covering school fees, and keeping the family afloat, James insists that domestic chores are not his duty.
He does not mind picking up the children from school, but anything beyond that feels, in his words, “against nature.”
This resistance has caused tension in the marriage. Instead of spending evenings at home, James now chooses to hang out with friends or sit in restaurants until late.
He claims that his wife’s constant complaints are pushing him away and even suspects she might be seeing someone else.
“I feel disrespected. She talks to me as if I’m no longer the head of the family,” he said.
