Madagascar's President, Andry Rajoelina, has dissolved the country's national assembly after reportedly learning about a possible impeachment.
This follows the opposition's announcement that it will begin impeachment proceedings against him in parliament for "abandonment of post".
In response, he has dissolved the house to prevent it from discussing his removal, as reported by BBC.
The abandonment of post allegations follow reports that Rajoelina has since fled to France, afraid of what he claims are attempts to overturn his government and harm him.
Rajoelina has personally admitted to having fled the country, and said in a live broadcast that he did this to secure his safety.
But the dissolution of parliament has been dismissed by the opposition, which says it was done in contravention of the constitution.
"This decree is not legally valid. The president of the national assembly says he was not consulted," Leader of Opposition, Siteny Randrianasoloniaiko, is quoted as saying.
