If Not 2027, ODM Must Produce President in 2032— Mbadi Say Working With Ruto Is Strategic Survival

Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has stirred fresh debate in national and party politics after boldly declaring that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and the Luo community must rethink their long-term strategy if they hope to ascend to power.

Mbadi stated that ODM must position itself either to produce the president in 2027 or, at the very least, guarantee a presidential victory in 2032 — terming it the party’s “irreducible minimum.”

CS Mbadi revealed internal pressures and conflicting advice from various political actors who, he said, are attempting to sway ODM’s alliances without offering any meaningful placement for the party.

“There are some people telling us we should not work with William Ruto,” Mbadi said.

“They are telling us to work with Rigathi Gachagua so that we can work with Kalonzo. Yet in their lineup, we are nowhere. In Ruto’s lineup, at least we are somewhere. We must strategize. We must learn to be in government to form government.”

Mbadi’s statement appears to signal a major shift from traditional opposition politics toward pragmatic positioning.

His comments also reflect growing concerns within ODM over the party’s future influence following the retirement of long-time opposition leader Raila Odinga.

The Treasury CS argued that ODM must stop operating on political emotions and instead study the dynamics of power if the party hopes to remain relevant.

According to Mbadi, aligning with President Ruto could give ODM critical leverage, visibility, and bargaining power — something he believes is missing in proposals pushed by other political camps.

He insisted that securing the presidency is no longer optional but a generational duty.

“If we cannot produce a President in 2027, then we must produce the President of Kenya in 2032,” he declared.

Mbadi’s remarks are expected to trigger intense reactions within ODM and across the political spectrum, as leaders weigh the implications of potentially aligning with the Kenya Kwanza government on the road to 2027 and beyond.
