Prominent constitutional lawyer Kibe Mungai has delivered a strong message criticizing the Kenyan government’s failure to protect its citizens from mistreatment in neighboring countries.
His remarks come amid growing anger over reports of Kenyans being detained, tortured, or harassed across East Africa.
According to Mungai, Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya have each lost their moral direction in different ways.
“Tanzania is backward, Uganda remains a military dictatorship, and Kenya is a betrayer,” he said, voicing frustration over the silence of President William Ruto’s administration in the face of growing regional injustices.
He argued that it is deeply shameful for a country like Kenya seen as a leader in democracy and regional peace to watch helplessly as dictators boast about torturing its citizens.
Mungai said Kenya’s leadership should stand firm and demand justice whenever its people are mistreated abroad.
He described the situation as a complete failure of foreign policy and national pride, calling it a betrayal of the very principles Kenya has long claimed to uphold freedom, democracy, and respect for human rights.
“How can we claim to be a free nation when our neighbors abuse our people, and our own government looks away?” he asked.
Mungai further warned that silence in the face of injustice only emboldens dictators.
He said if Kenya does not take a strong diplomatic stance now, the region risks sliding into a period where fear and oppression replace dialogue and cooperation.
