Gachagua's New Campaign Strategy in Mbeere North Sends Jitters in Ruto's Camp

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has stepped up his campaign for the Democratic Party of Kenya (DCP) candidate, Newton Karish, ahead of the Mbeere North parliamentary by-election on November 27.

On Monday, November 17, Gachagua was seen walking through neighborhoods and mango farms, combining his routine morning exercise with door-to-door campaigning.

During his visits, Gachagua met residents face-to-face, urging them to support Karish.

He praised the locals for their warm reception and pledged to remain in Mbeere North for the next nine days, listening to and engaging voters directly.

“My morning walk through the mango farms has been refreshing and gives me the chance to talk with residents one-on-one. The support I have received is encouraging. People have assured me they will not sell their vote, no matter the price,” he said.

The former deputy president also posted updates on social media, highlighting the dedication of the residents and their commitment to the United Opposition candidate.

Gachagua emphasized that his campaign is focused on grassroots interaction, ensuring voters understand Karish’s vision and priorities.

However, Gachagua’s presence in Mbeere North has not gone unchallenged. The ruling party, United Democratic Alliance (UDA), raised objections, claiming that Gachagua’s campaign could incite chaos in the constituency.

UDA officials argued that DCP has no official mandate in Mbeere North and has not signed the election code of conduct.

Legal counsel Adrian Kamotho stated, “The DCP party has no standing in Mbeere North politics. They should stop orchestrating plans to cause confusion.”
In response to these complaints, Gachagua wrote to the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, warning that the government may try to disrupt his campaign events.

He claimed that goons had threatened him and his supporters during his tour and that authorities had not taken action.

Gachagua cautioned the government against interfering with his rallies, assuring that residents of Mbeere North would protect him.

Throughout his campaign, Gachagua has focused on direct voter engagement rather than relying on media campaigns alone.
