Political analyst Mutahi Ngunyi has raised concerns about the future of the Kikuyu community in Kenya’s political landscape, warning that their long-held dominance might be challenged in the upcoming 2027 elections.
In his remarks, Ngunyi pointed out that the Kikuyus have enjoyed significant political influence for many years, but this era could be coming to an end.
He believes that the 2027 elections will bring about a major political shift, with strong opposition to Kikuyu dominance.
Ngunyi’s warning, "You don't know what you got until you lose it," highlighted the possibility of the Kikuyu community losing their privileged position.
He noted that there is growing frustration among other communities in Kenya who feel left out of the political equation due to Kikuyu influence.
This dissatisfaction could create an opportunity for President William Ruto, who successfully garnered non-Kikuyu votes in the 2022 election, to build a strong coalition against the Kikuyu political establishment.
Ruto’s strategy, which focused on appealing to marginalized communities, could prove effective again in 2027, according to Ngunyi.
The analyst believes that Ruto can harness the anger of these groups to challenge Kikuyu influence and secure another victory.
With this in mind, Ngunyi urged the Kikuyu community to be cautious and aware of the changing political tides.
Ngunyi emphasized that the Kikuyus need to unite and think strategically to maintain their political relevance.
He warned that failing to adjust to the evolving situation could risk alienating them from the wider Kenyan population.
"Tread carefully," Ngunyi advised, urging the Kikuyu community to reflect on their position and prepare for potential shifts in power.
