Political strategist Pauline Njoroge has revealed a light yet telling moment with her boyfriend after she registered for the Social Health Authority (SHA) while in hospital.
Njoroge shared a personal story highlighting the frustrations many Kenyans face with the Social Health Authority (SHA) system.
In a candid post, Njoroge narrated how she struggled to register for SHA while preparing for hospital admission last week.
According to her, the online system kept failing to process her registration despite several attempts.
“We would input the OTP, it would buffer forever, then take us back to the start,” she wrote, adding that even SHA officials confirmed the system was down.
After multiple failed attempts, she decided to try again before discharge, against her boyfriend’s advice.
“Mr. told me not to bother, as it was already too late,” she said. But out of curiosity, she registered and paid nearly KSh 50,000 in premiums.
However, on her discharge day, Njoroge was shocked to find that SHA had only paid about KSh 4,000 for her one-night bed stay.
“I asked Mr. why it hadn’t covered the procedure and medication, and he just said, ‘Didn’t I tell you not to register?’” she recounted.
Expressing disappointment, Njoroge criticized the government for spending KSh 104 billion on a system she described as “unstable and parasitic.”
She lamented that using SHA for outpatient services was “like drawing water from a rock,” concluding that she had lost faith in the government’s reliability.
