What Mourners Were Heard Shouting Moments Fred Matiangi Arrived At Raila Odinga’s Burial In Bondo

There was excitement and emotion in equal measure in Bondo, Siaya County, after former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiangi made a surprise appearance at the burial of the late ODM boss and Broad-Based Government partner Raila Amolo Odinga.

The former powerful minister, who had been away from the national political scene for months, received a thunderous welcome from thousands of mourners who had gathered to bid farewell to the opposition icon.

In a viral clip shared online watch here, the moment Matiangi stepped out of his vehicle, chants of his name erupted across the field.

Locals waved, cheered, and shouted in celebration, calling him one of the “sons of Raila” as he made his way to the main tent where top leaders were seated.

The atmosphere briefly shifted from mourning to celebration as residents struggled to catch a glimpse of the man who once served closely under former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Matiangi, who was accompanied by a small delegation believed to be from the opposition camp, joined dignitaries from across the political divide.

Observers noted that his appearance carried deep symbolism, especially since he has maintained a low profile since leaving government.

His return to the public eye during Raila’s final farewell was seen as both a gesture of respect and a subtle political statement about loyalty and legacy.

As Raila’s casket lay in honor under the Kenyan flag, Matiangi stood among prominent figures including President William Ruto, former President Uhuru Kenyatta, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, and Nigeria’s ex-leader Olusegun Obasanjo.

His presence reignited memories of the 2018 handshake era and Raila’s long struggle for reform, a journey Matiangi once supported silently from within government ranks.

Online, Kenyans expressed mixed emotions. Some praised him for showing humility and standing with the Odinga family, while others questioned whether his return to the spotlight hinted at a possible political comeback.
